In the beginning

This all started about four years ago, when I was sitting in a class on audiological rehabilitation for my speech pathology degree. One day we had some Australian guest speakers, and they did a slide show where they mentioned that speech therapists between our countries could do exchanges.  I remember thinking, "Well, I'd like to do that."  After I finished my degree, I moved back home with my parents and got a job at a nursing home.  Eventually I got a second job as well, and lived cheaply to save up money. I would never have been able to do this without my parents, needless to say.

One of my aunts gave me the rest of the idea.  When I mentioned I was going to go work in Australia, she said, "Well, of course you must buy a ticket around the world."  She's British, and this is evidently A Thing there. I'd never heard of such a thing.

But then I started researching.
